The song is in AABC form. Autumn Leaves chords were originally, and are most commonly, performed in the key of E minor, but are also played in G minor and other keys. I learned the Autumn Leaves Chords as a kid, maybe 15 or 16 years old. I think I had just broken up with my first girlfriend or should I say she broke up with me and the mood of the song captured what I was feeling as it is with many of our favorite songs.
Years later I was surprised that it turned up as a lesson in music school at Berklee College of music. Just a few days ago I arranged a swing version on my arranger keyboard and though it would be a good idea to share it with you.
If you get comfortable with the chord progression for this song you will find parts of it turning up in lots of songs you will encounter in popular jazz music as well as other genres. The song is most often played in the Key of E minor, the relative minor of G major thus you will notice the F in the key signature. For more on key signatures you would do well to study the circle of fifths.
There are two lessons I would recommend to help you with your understanding of diatonic chords and some useful exercises that are guaranteed to have you moving through jazz chord changes easily. Diatonic Chords and Common Chord Progressions. You will notice as you play through the changes that the root motion jumps up a fourth and down a fifth almost without exception. This is one of the reasons that this tune is taught to beginning jazz students as this motion is very very common in Jazz.

Keep in mind, that if your instrument is not a Concert C instrument like guitar and piano you should know how to transpose to your key. So if you are a Bb tenor sax player, the key Autumn Leaves is in is A minor a whole step up from the concert key.
If you are an Eb alto sax player, E minor a minor 3 rd down from the concert key. If you are a C instrument like piano or guitar, you will be playing in G minor as is. When learning or working on a song, the most important thing you can do is listen.
Listen to as many versions of Autumn Leaves as you can. Note: on the Boss Tenors recording there is some added harmonic movement outside of the original chord changes. However, I always suggest learning the melody by ear. If you read the melody from a piece of sheet music you may get the boiled down, basic idea of the melody, but you miss many of the nuances.
Pro tip: check out that Sinatra recording. To understand Autumn Leaves and the chords analysis I am about to show you, it is imperative that you understand how chord progressions work. But for a quick summary of both, they result in these two charts which essentially show you how chords work to create chord progressions.
The Minor Diatonic Series of 7th Chords is based off of the natural minor scale, harmonic minor scale and melodic minor scale. The V chord is borrowed from the harmonic and melodic minor harmonization. Instead of it being a minor 7 like it would be if it were a natural minor scale it is turned into a dominant 7 chord.
The V chord in traditional harmony is almost always a dominant 7 chord. The V often resolves to the I chord and therefore the V in the harmonic and melodic minor is appropriate in this case. In the same way, the vi chord is borrowed from the melodic minor. Autumn Leaves is almost entirely made up of major and minor ii-V-I chord progressions. You need to understand the roman numeral numbering system as it pertains to this chart.
Again, if any of this confuses you, go check out those posts I suggested. As you can see, I have color-coded different sections of the form to help you understand what is going on with the chords and chord progressions.
Let me quickly identify them:. The first thing I want to observe about Autumn Leaves is how it shifts between the relative major and minor keys. Major and minor keys that share the same key signature are called relative keys. Essentially, they share the exact same notes as each other. In the case of G minor what would that be? Bb major. Here is a Bb major scale, and as you can see, they share the exact same key signature. Fairly simple, right? Autumn Leaves is the perfect study of how relative major and minor keys work together.

It starts out on the root minor, and moves to a dominant IV chord. The IV chord in a minor key is normally minor, but jazz musicians are constantly turning minor chords into dominant 7 chords.
I personally find it beneficial to think of both of those bars as isolated ii-V chord progressions with no attachment to any particular key.Learning the Autumn Leaves chord progression is an important part of learning jazz guitar. Besides being one of the most commonly played standards at jam sessions, the Autumn Leaves chord progression is a great study for major and minor ii V I chords. The examples in this article only cover these two ii V I progressions.
But you could play through each example twice and then play the minor ii V I followed by the major ii V I to get the B section which would give you three quarters of the Autumn Leaves chord progression. To play through each of these Autumn Leaves chord progression studies you will need to know the following techniques:.
Try playing through chords using whole notes rhythms at first and eventually quarter notes while humming or whistling the melody to memorize the chords. For further chordal study I recommend creating a melody arrangement using the chords from the Autumn Leaves chord progression. Practicing using whole note rhythms ensures that there is enough time to switch between each chord which is particularly useful if you are working on new jazz guitar chords. Take note of the voice leading in each chord too. Rather than jumping across the fretboard, each of the chord moves to the nearest available chord which only requires moving a few frets.
This example uses drop 2 chord inversions for the minor 7 th and major chords and dominant7b9 chords for the dominant 7ths. Once you can fluently play this study, use the same chords on the same string set, but start with a different C-7 voicing.
Doing this will ensure that you cover all the possible inversions using drop 2 chords and dom7b9 chords on the top four strings. You can also start with a C-7 higher up the neck and descend through inversions rather than ascend, like in this example. Learning to play walking bass lines is an important part of developing good comping skills.
This next autumn leaves chord progression study demonstrates the comping with bass lines technique. Drop 3 chord inversions are used in the last two bars to create movement and interest. Try to create your own bass lines starting in different areas of the neck that go in different directions. Here is an etude that features modern jazz guitar voicings to finish off this autumn leaves chord progression study. The chords in this example are more advanced than the previous studies so they might require more practice to play proficiently if you are new to jazz guitar.
Most of the chords is in this example feature clusters which are two intervals that are close together usually resulting in a dissonant effect. If modern jazz guitar comping is your thing and you want to expand on this example, try experiment with inverted quartal chords and sus9 chords.

There are a number of different ways that you can comp through a jazz standard on the guitar. For some people, drop 2 and drop 3 chords are the way to go in their playing. Other players draw upon shell voicings or triads to outline progressions. Download now and learn chord shapes! To help you check out double-stops in a comping situation, this section outlines a jazz guitar chord study over the standard Autumn Leaves.
To help you understand the intervals used in this jazz guitar comping study, here is an explanation of how to build each interval as well as how they are normally fingered on the guitar fretboard. Since they are more ambiguous than 3rds or 6ths, 4ths are often used in a more modern context, though they are also great for outlining 3rds and 7ths in a traditional context. These are best played on adjacent strings but can also be played across three strings, such as playing C-G on the 4 th and 2 nd strings.
Again, these intervals have more of a modern sound to them, but they are also good to outline 3rds and 7ths in jazz chord progressions.
Because there is more room between the lowest and highest notes, it is best to play 6 ths by skipping strings, such as play C-A on the 3 rd and 1 st strings of the guitar. If you find that your ears are drawn to any of these intervals in particular, try working it further in your practice routine in order to bring this intervallic sound into your playing.
In order to make things easier on your picking hand, try playing in a hybrid style or pure fingerstyle. By using the hybrid or fingerstyle techniques to play this chord study, you will be able to play each double-stop and phrase in a clean fashion, even at faster tempos. If you have trouble with hybrid or fingerstyle picking, feel free to slow things down. Work the chords with a metronome, and then slowly increase the tempo until you can play along with the example and backing track below.
Here is the chord study to work out and learn in your practice routine. To begin, work on each four-bar phrase separately. Memorize it and get it up to speed with the track, before moving on to the next phrase in the study. Once you have worked out each phrase on its own, start putting together the four 8-bar phrases, then the two bar phrases, before working the study as a whole.
Learning to play jazzy sounding chords is one of the most enjoyable and challenging parts of playing jazz guitar.
Rather than bog yourself down by learning all new chord shapes, you can adapt shapes you already know to create new sounds in your playing. One of the most popular ways to do this is to remove the root note from any four-note chord you know. This gives you a three-note triad that outlines the chord and is easier to play than the four-note version.
In this lesson, you learn how to remove the root from common chords to create triads in your playing. Then you apply that knowledge to a jazz standard, Autumn Leavesas you take these triads to a musical situation.

Now that you know what triads are used to build rootless chords, here they are on the guitar to check out. The first bar of each chord is a common chord shape, then the second bar has the root note removed. Here are the chords and rootless chords for the next four bars of Autumn Leaves, a ii V I in E minor.
Again, a common chord voicing is in the first bar, followed by the rootless chord and the name of that triad in the second bar. Play through both of these examples to get a feel for how rootless chords sit and sound on the guitar. Here, two or more triad shapes for each chord are used. Start by learning one shape in each bar and comp with those shapes over the backing track. Then, learn the rest of the shapes and comp with those grips over the backing track.
As you can see, the triads are written in a plain rhythm. Start by playing whole and half notes, keeping the rhythms simple as you work on these new chord shapes. You can also treat each triad as an arpeggio and play them as single notes, adding these shapes to your soloing ideas in the process.If you want to crush it as a jazz improviser, knowing how to improvise over a blues inside and out will give you an unfair advantage.

Hey, think of the turnaround as a harmonic device using tri-tone substitutions for the domV's on ii V progressions. Then substitue a dominant tritone for the C and Bb and they become F and E. Now you have, Gm F 7, Fm E7.

Trombone used to be my major instrument in high school.
The trombone is a Bb instrument because the overtone series begins on a Bb. Weird, huh? The trumpet and trombone are exactly one octave apart in pitch. Oddly enough, however, the trumpet is a transposing instrument, and so what sounds a Bb the trumpets actually is written as a C. To illustrate, a trombone player and trumpet player could be playing a concert Bb an octave apart.
The trombone player would be thinking Bb, and the trumpet player would be thinking C, even though they are both playing a concert Bb. Anyway, all that to say that a trombone IS a Bb instrument because the first position overtone series starts on Bb, but they are also a C instrument as far as the written notes go, as the trombone is non-transposing concert pitch.
